Ah... the mono "Pepper"! As we all know this is exactly how The Beatles themselves mixed and presented this iconic album. There are many noticeable differences throughout this compared to the stereo mix and I have to say this mono version is far superior.
Any fan of "Pepper" who have never heard the mono mix owe it to themselves to grab it right now.

As the history books tell us, the Beatles spent three weeks mixing the mono version of SPLHCB. Mono was still the predominant format in 1967; stereo was still in transition from novelty to household word. After finishing their mix, the group left the stereo mixing to producer George Martin, who accomplished this in three days. Long after this came the late '80s CD remix, which George Harrison went on record as disliking.
Anyone know how to convert wma files to mp3 or aac formats?
George just dind't dislike just Pepper, he disliked the entire series. He wanted everything in MONO since the group mixed the mono issues. The stereo issues were mixed as a afterthought. It's hard to do proper stereo mixing using 4-track tape where the main instumental tracks are locked, ditto for the other three. All those 4-track to 4-track reduction mixes were just getting piled togeter on track one, there's really no soundstage or image depth. It was engeineered for mono and sounds better in mono. If you like the mono Pepper, check out the mono "White Album", that's the cheese. I'm planning to do a month of MONO albums on my blog next month. - M.A.
In those days I always bought rock records in mono - they were cheaper than their stereo counterparts. I could buy more music that way! If only I'd had foresight to buy duplicates when the remainder bins were full of mono platters. Sigh.
This mono mix is a revelation -- but then so was the stereo CD master. Let's not dismiss it quite so hastily. Just because it took amateurs 3 months to arrive at an acceptable mix, that's no reason to think that a professional would need anywere near the same amount of time to throw together a stereo mix. Expecially after he spent those same three months supervising the first one.
That said, this thing is beautiful. It's like hearing it for the first time.
I have waited along time to hear the mono version of "Peppers" and it is great to finally hear it. But I prefer the stereo mix. I find the mono not as 'smooth' as the stereo mix... a bit more rough.
I'm not surprised the stereo mix only took a few days... after all, George Martin and Geff Emerick are pro audio guys and also they had a guide to follow (the mono mix). Most of the audio decisions had already been made by The Beatles.
Its amazing to think the biggest band in the world EVER released two different versions of it's most famous LP and one version is not officially available on CD! Is EMI missing a huge sales opportunity here? :-)

The mono version is a very interesting listen, but I think the mono version lacks a subtlely the stereo version has. Especially in "Within You Without You," the Indian percussion is a bit loud for my taste and the end laugh sounds even clunkier.
Also, I think the panning in the stereo version helps create an overall narrative to the work. Some of the four-track hard-panning can be annoying, but in "A Day in the Life," there's something wonderful in the way the pan positions change over the course of the song.
The mono sounds great on the rock-y numbers, but I think the stereo version is still a better "journey in sound."
Holee Merda! I have heard of the mystical mono-Pepper, and now I've finally heard it. Very interesting...especially Sgt Pepper's reprise. A unique intro and someone (Paul?) shouting out thank you's to the audience! I agree with the above poster; Capitol is missing the boat not making this mix available.

the web and download a program called
"EasyWMA 2.5.7. This program cost me a whole big $10 (ha,ha) and enabled me to convert the entire Sgt. Pepper's in about
10 mins.Well worth the investment.
